Supplemental Portfolio

About

This program is designed for talented students who are applying to colleges as non-art majors. A supplemental art portfolio makes your candidacy more competitive and demonstrates dedication to extracurricular activities. Portfolios created in this program will showcase creative thinking, personal expression, and technical finesse.

Why Students Should Submit the Arts Supplement?

You are required to submit a portfolio of your artwork: sculpture, painting, graphic design, etc. Alternatively, you might be considering sending in a portfolio to showcase your talent as a supplement to your college application, thus making your candidacy more competitive. Submitting a portfolio is not easy, and the process likely began in your sophomore or junior year, building your portfolio materials and deciding how to make your portfolio wide-ranging and varied.

  • HARVARD UNIVERSITY

Applicants with truly exceptions talents or accomplishments in Visual arts (art, film, photography) may submit 2-25 examples of recent work. Include title, brief description, medium and date created. Typically such submissions should demonstrate substantial talent beyond standard high-school level accomplishment.

  • BROWN UNIVERSITY

Upload up to 15 images, up to 5MB each. Accepted image formats include .jpg, .gif, or .png. A $10 non-refundable processing fee is also required at the time of submission. If you have a Common Application fee waiver, the SlideRoom fee will automatically be waived. Portfolios should be a strong supplement to your application, thoughtfully conceived and demonstrating above-average visual art talent. Class assignments, as well as work produced outside the classroom indicating your personal area of interest, are encouraged. If photographs are included, they are expected to go beyond hobbyist photography such as vacation snapshots or casually conceived images, and should include a variety of artistically sound content. A short statement about your interest in art may be included as well.

  • PRINCETON UNIVERSITY

We encourage applicants to include works that reflect experimentation and imagination rather than stylistic consistency. We also encourage including exploratory and/or preparatory works (such as sketchbook pages) to show how you think visually. Whether you are self-taught or have attended art classes, please represent the breadth, depth and complexity of your efforts. Test your digital materials to make sure they are viewable in their entirety before submitting them. If your portfolio includes work from more than one category, choose the category that is your predominant one, or submit under interdisciplinary. Your portfolio may include 5-20 images of your most recent work in any medium or across media. For drawing or painting submissions, if possible, please include some examples that involve drawing from observation.

  • COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

We encourage you to convey the breadth and depth of your extra-curricular pursuits within the activities section of your admission application—including the full name of each organization in which you participate and a brief description of your involvement. Please submit up to 20 images that highlight the best work in your portfolio. Images may be submitted only in jpg, png, or gif formats, up to 5 MB each. Please specify the title, year and medium for each submission. Applicants are welcome to submit a résumé (in pdf format) listing their visual arts experience and recognition.

  • YALE UNIVERSITY

Whether or not you wish to major in art as an undergraduate, if you are an advanced visual artist you may consider submitting an art portfolio as part of your application. Please bear in mind that Yale School of Art faculty members review selected portfolios, not admissions officers. You should only consider submitting work if your artwork is a strong and important part of your application and demonstrates a high level of ability for a high school artist. You should limit the work submitted to between 5 and 8 pieces, which should include at least one drawing.

  • STANFORD UNIVERSITY

Students submitting a portfolio in Art Practice must include an artist’s statement of no more than 250 words describing concepts, formal issues, process and influences. Submit exactly 10 slides of two-dimensional work demonstrating strong ideas and skills or a background in visual art practice beyond class assignments (inventive personal imagery, abstractions, difficult narratives, etc.).
